GBAN Deeply Mourns the Loss of Australian Charter Member Lou Williams

Lou Williams Memorial DedicationPosted on April 18, 2017

The Global Ban Asbestos Network (GBAN) mourns the loss of our own beloved Australian Mesothelioma Warrior, Louise “Lou” Williams, who passed away on April 18, 2017, after courageously battling mesothelioma for more than 14 years.

The impact Lou had on the world is unquestionable. She was a much-loved friend to many of us and an inspiring voice in raising asbestos awareness and fighting for a worldwide asbestos ban. In our VALOR blog, the outpouring of love and respect for Lou only just begins to demonstrate how many lives she has touched. “Kind,” “generous,” “graceful,” “strong,” “inspiration,” and “funny” are worlds frequently used when describing this wonderful woman.

Children who aren’t even born yet will die of asbestos related disease

Bill Shorten, minister for education, employment and workplace relations of Australia

The asbestos epidemic kills one person every two hours in the United States, one every four hours in the United Kingdom, three every day in Italy and Germany, two every day in France, Japan, Australia, and one a day in the Netherlands”: Boggio (2013).

Francisco Báez Baquet

Most of the world asbestos commerce corresponds to the raw material itself and to the main product which is produced with it, the ones produced with cement-asbestos. This worldwide commerce, which presupposes a shipping from the origin to the consumption or production spots, includes a maritime shipping to a greater or lesser degree: Scott Frey (1998) & (2006).

AFeVA PRESS RELEASE: Turin Prosecution appeals the decision of the Investigating magistrate of Turin in the Court of Cassation

Posted on January 19, 2017

AFEVA LogoA new leaf in the book of the legal battle as the Turin Prosecution appeals the decision of the Investigating magistrate of Turin in the Court of Cassation. It is a battle which AFEVA has been fighting for many, too many years in a quest for justice.

As an association we agree with this step, given why it is being pursued and its underlying motivations. The impact of the verdict – the statute of limitations and the allocation of the trials in several courts, too many obvious mistakes for the prosecution to ignore it and resign.

“Eternit on Trial in Belgium” by Dr. Barry Castleman

In Belgium, the trial court awarded 260,000 euros to the Jonckheere family for the death of Eric Jonckheere’s mother in 2000 from environmentally caused mesothelioma.  In the Upper Court of Appeal, Eternit lawyers argued that the cancer was caused by crocidolite asbestos, which the factory in Kapelle stopped using in the late 1970s; and therefore, compensation would be barred by the statute of limitations.  The Jonckheere family’s lawyer, Jan Fermon, argued that three types of asbestos were found in Francoise Jonckheere’s lungs, and that none could be ruled out as causing mesothelioma.  If the appeal court accepts this argument, the statute of limitations would not bar compensation, as the family moved from Kapelle in 1991.

“Lessons Learned from the Asbestos Spy” by Hazards Magazine Editor Rory O’Neil

Science frictionThere’s quite a few cautionary lessons [regarding the Rob Moore asbestos spy case], some of which I didn’t anticipate. These were reinforced by the recent Voiceless Victims spying revelations, where many of the same people were targeted over their safety and labour rights activities.
